Artist Statement

Over the past year, my practice has expanded into multimedia work incorporating materials, such as ceramic, metal, wood, cement, fiber, light and organic materials. I aim to create a dialogue with natural and synthetic materials about humanity's relationship to overlooked aspects of our environments and communities and how it is impacting our society, nature, and future. One example is Night Light, a piece that uses the conductive properties of gold inlay on a ceramic substrate to carry energy from a battery to an LED. This piece speaks about value in the versatility of ceramics and the costs of our amenities. Beyond physical material research, I am deeply interested in how different mediums can evoke emotion, energy, and meaning. For instance my relationship with clay began from my labor work experience and for me it holds meanings of hardship, empowerment, and curiosity. My research also engages with the historical and anthropological significance of materials and objects. I've been drawn to how different materials can speak a quiet language: the cement beneath our feet, the wood framing our structures, and the glass in our windows that allows us to see. They tell us where we have been, maybe even where we are going. I reference the human connection to contemporary environments, while creating dialogue about the byproduct of our comforts.
